Cremations

Melissa and Shaq, owners and operators of Kootenay Pet Cremations (KPC), are passionate about providing pet owners respectful and meaningful aftercare options for your beloved pets. They offer regular and private cremation options in addition to keepsake memorial items to suit every family.

Regular cremation: Your pet will be cremated alongside other animals and their ashes respectfully spread around KPC’s rural property in Fruitvale, BC with nearby hiking trails.

Private cremation: Your pet will be cremated individually, ensuring only their remains will be returned to you in your choice of an engraved wooden urn or elegant biodegradable scatter tube for burial or ease of spreading ashes. Photos of these options are shown below (click on the image to enlarge). This includes complimentary home delivery of your pet’s ashes.

After your in‑home euthanasia with Ayers Veterinary Services, I will coordinate transportation from your home to the crematorium, ensuring care and dignity throughout the entire process.

Home Burial

Home burial of a pet is legal in many communities in rural British Columbia but rules vary and it is often highly restricted—check municipal bylaws and any deed/condo restrictions first. It is illegal to bury a pet on Crown land, in provincial parks, or in public forested areas without authorization.

Choose a location away from water sources, property lines, and utility lines; call before you dig to locate buried services. Dig a hole at least 1.5-2 meters (4-6 feet) deep and place the pet in a biodegradable container or wrap. Mark the grave and avoid shallow graves that can expose remains or result in scavenging. Euthanasia drugs remain in the body and are highly toxic to scavenging wildlife (bears, coyotes, dogs, etc) that may dig up the remains.

Consider local soil and drainage; in high water-table areas, burial may not be suitable. The grave must often be at least 30-150 metres (100-500 feet) away from any wells, streams, ditches, or bodies of water depending on regional laws. Keep records of the date and location for future reference.

If you’re unsure about legality or safety, consult your municipality, consider a Euthabag (see below) or cremation. Cremation allows you to bury your pet’s ashes without the concerns of scavenging and environmental contamination with euthanasia drugs.
